Draft Discussion Andy Ryan The-DallasCowboys.com Staff Writer April 22, 2008 10:48 PM Tuesday was nothing but draft-talk on Valley Ranch. Jerry Jones addressed the local media on the upcoming draft – giving insight on the Cowboy’s plans and answering questions dealing with trading his two first round draft picks up or down. Having the two first round draft picks gives the Cowboys a lot of draft day value and choices. They could choose to keep the two picks, and draft presumably starting-talent players to fill in at positions that are in need. They could also trade one of the first rounders and in return get a veteran player, such as a wide out like Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin of the Cardinals, or Detriot WR Roy Williams. Of course this would likely require another draft pick as well but would certainly help out the receiving corps. Also, trading up for a top-10 pick is not out of question as well, especially if the Cowboys want a player they really covet, perhaps Darren McFadden. Although with this the Cowboys also suffer the salary cap hit for signing a top-10 rookie. And we know those are expensive – Miami signed Michigan OT to a six year, $57.75 million contract earlier today with the number one pick. The top 10 picks won’t differ too dramatically from that template contract. Jones helped answered questions dealing with all of these situations today. He stated the team won’t look away from moving up or down in the draft. The Dallas owner also gave helpful insight onto what the Cowboys plan to do with their two first round picks, by saying that he doesn’t see the organization drafting a receiver in the first round. "If you're looking for an immediate impact receiver, that's not there. An immediate impact, a guy that can immediately come in and take it off of Terrell (Owens) and add to it,” Jones exclaimed, “ I know we've got it in-house if Terry Glenn can do it. And I'm positive, I'm thinking positive about Terry Glenn. I don't have any idea how he's going to continue to go." He went on to say, “..I really like some of the things that our younger receivers are doing for us. But this draft doesn't have, for us, a receiver that could really get that accomplished this year." That pretty much rules out the possibility of the Cowboys going after rookie receivers such as DeSean Jackson, Limas Sweed, Malcolm Kelly, or Early Doucet on Saturday. This means it is more likely that the Cowboys take a RB and a CB with those first two round picks – if they so chose to keep them. Jones did, however, mention the possibility of trading for a veteran wide-out when they are on the clock.
“Draft day is an important time to get the most value for a veteran player if he's in demand. If I'm the team that's got the player, my best time to move is right then,” Jones said. “The minute the draft is over, picks almost don't have anywhere near the value and everybody is protecting the players they've got and the veteran players." Presumably, the Cowboys more than likely are either going to keep their two first rounders and draft a solid running back and cornerback, or trade away one of them to acquire a veteran wide receiver.
